Extrapolating a human-safe range down to a 10 lb dog by simple weight-scaling is a common industry shortcut, and it’s one I’m cautious about, because dogs metabolize compounds differently than people do across the board.
This is where label tiers earn their keep. A responsibly formulated product sets its “small dog” serving from its own safety and palatability data on that specific formulation — concentration, delivery form, other actives in the same chew — not from a generic mg/kg conversion an owner does with a calculator. When you’re weighing how much to give a 10 lb dog, the honest answer is: follow that product’s small-dog line on the label, confirm it against your dog’s actual weight, and don’t average two products’ doses together.

A scenario that shows why the tier matters
A colleague described a case that sticks with me: a 10 lb dachshund, nine years old, whose owner had been splitting an adult child’s leftover NR capsules in half because “it seemed like roughly the right ratio.” Three weeks in, the dog was having loose stools most mornings — not dramatic, but persistent enough that the owner assumed it was just aging. The answer is that a chew isn’t a pure precursor dose — it’s a formulation with binders, flavoring, and often co-actives like quercetin or resveratrol, and its safety data was generated as that whole formulation, at that serving size, in that species. Quercetin, a flavonoid studied for antioxidant and cellular-support properties, and resveratrol are common co-ingredients in these longevity chews, and both are still active research areas rather than settled canine dosing science. One in vitro study found that quercetin, unformulated quercetin, NAC, and ascorbic acid, at the concentrations used, Pharmaceuticals (DOI.3390/ph19040525): did not affect the feeding behavior of the worms tested — a useful signal of tolerability at the cellular level, but not a canine dose-finding result. Separately, embryonic exposure to a resveratrol-related compound in another in vitro model Phytomedicine (DOI.1016/j.phymed.2026.158531): accelerated pupation and adult emergence but shortened adult lifespan — a reminder that “more antioxidant” is not automatically “better outcome,” even outside the dog. Given that uncertainty, I’d rather an owner slightly under-dose from a tested label tier than free-hand a number based on adult-human research.
Where the current commercial evidence actually stands
The most publicized canine data point in this space came from Animal Biosciences’ Leap Years supplement, developed with input from Harvard’s David Sinclair, which the company said improved measures of cognitive function and age-related decline in a company-run trial. That claim drew real scientific pushback: veterinary researcher Matt Kaeberlein publicly disputed the framing, and Animal Biosciences later walked back language describing the results as “proven to reverse aging in dogs,” a correction documented in SkeptVet: an evidence update from veterinarian Brennen McKenzie. I bring this up not to single out one brand, but because it’s the clearest recent example of how far marketing language can outrun what a trial actually showed — and it’s exactly why I tell owners to read the study behind a claim, not just the headline on the jar.
Applying this at home this week
Say your 10 lb dog is recovering from a mild ACL strain and her rehab plan already includes a joint supplement; you’re now weighing whether to layer in an NAD+ precursor chew too.
